[von cosa, der italienischen Bezeichnung für die Unbekannte in Gleichungen] das, -, Frühform der Algebra im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert, die zuerst in Oberitalien entwickelt wurde. Ihre Vertreter, die Cossisten, führten die Verwendung von mathematischen Symbolen anstelle der bis dahin üblichen Worterklärungen ein, um eine Systematisierung und Vereinfachung der Gleichungslehre zu ermöglichen. Ursprünglich erfand jeder Autor die Zeichen selbst; erst allmählich setzten sich verbindliche Bezeichnungen durch, beginnend mit denen für die ersten Potenzen der Variablen und für die Operationen der Addition und Subtraktion. - Großen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung des europäischen Coss übte die 1544 erschienene »Arithmetica integra« von M. Stifel aus. In dieser Zeit setzten sich die heute noch üblichen Symbole wie +, —, =, das Wurzelzeichen und der Bruchstrich durch. Weitere wichtige Vertreter sind N. Tartaglia, G. Cardano, C. Clarius und S. Stevin. Das Coss wurde durch das Wirken von F. Viète und R. Descartes beendet, die die weitere Entwicklung der Algebra beeinflussten.
